The upgrading process of Dynamics AX 2012 to Dynamics 365
for Finance and Operations

Why upgrading Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations is important for your business.

If you are running Dynamics AX 2012 R2 or R3, there is an upgrade process that can be used to transition to Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations. Mainstream support for AX 2012 and AX 2012 R2, although you will not need to update, ends in October 2018, while R3 ends in October 2021.

The preparation process for your upgrade is therefore advisable from the start. For other AX versions, you will need the Microsoft Dynamics AX migration process.

Our dynamics 365 upgrade process:

Analysis Analysis

The main objective of the analysis phase is to estimate the effort and resources needed to update financial and operations to Dynamics 365.

The first step is to register for the Dynamics Lifecycle Services public preview (LCS). It gives you access to analytical tools to analyze the current AX 2012 environment and custom code. You can also use your own demo funding and the operating environment through the public preview.

After signing up for the LCS, pick the “AX 2012 to Dynamics 365 for Finance and Service Update Methodology” to direct you through the upgrade phase and connect to all supporting documents.

The next phase is to run your AX 2012 update analyzer tool. This tool helps you find data that can be cleaned without missing any functions. It also checks the current SQL settings and advocates performance optimization.

After data cleanup and updating review, run the system update estimation tool to migrate the current code and customizations for later resolution and find discrepancies with the Finance and Operations code base. Following the receipt of updates and code review software, a demo of Dynamics 365 is now available to assess new functionality for the Finance and Operating environment.

Finally, a project plan is generated with details from previous steps as the final step in the review process. The LCS update approach provides a blueprint for the project plan.

Execution

The purpose of the execution phase is to collect and carry out the planned tasks during the analysis phase.
The first step following Dynamics 365’s procurement of finance and operations is to move from a project for public previews to an LCS project. This is your LCS subscription project and includes information on Azure’s ecosystem and other related updates. The next move is for Microsoft Dynamics AX System/Database Administrators to perform AX 2012 preparation/pre-upgrade tasks that upgrade the analyzer tools and install any applicable hotfixes to your AX 2012 environment.

After performing pre-upgrade tasks, developers must complete the code upgrade tasks planned during the analysis process and resolve any code conflicts. At this stage, functional users need to work with the development team to create new modifications using the knowledge from the fit-gap review that was carried out earlier.
The last move is to update your data to your production environment. If the code update tasks have been completed, you can upgrade your AX 2012 database to Finance and Operations.

ValidateValidate

The first phase is cutover testing and a plan. The purpose is to practice the go-live cut-over process.
Two major workplaces are available:

Technical Workstream: The method of updating the data is this workflow. The amount of downtime allowed will be limited. No AX 2012 or Finance and Operations are available during this downtime.

Functional workstream: multiple configuration tasks in the financial and operating environment will be required once the data has been modified. These tasks need to be recorded, quantified and resource allocated, as they must comply with the technical tasks within the company downtime cap.

Following cutover testing, all company procedures, both new and old, need to be thoroughly and extensively reviewed.

Finally, you can finalize a go-live data upgrade checklist AX 2012 on any configuration improvements following complete functional testing after satisfactory completion of all business processes in the Sandbox or Acceptance environments.

So, once you pass all these steps, you are ready to go-live. Reach to the DFSM team now to get started with the process upgrade AX 2012 to dynamics 365 for finance and operations.
